From 6th June 2025, significant changes are coming to the real estate industry in Queensland. All licensed real estate agents will be required to complete compulsory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training each year and supply a copy of their Certificate of Attainment to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to maintain their licence. This change is a long-awaited and welcome improvement to the industry, designed to elevate professional standards and increase consumer confidence when buying or selling property.

Why This Change Matters

Up until now, Queensland real estate agents have not been required to undertake any formal, ongoing training once they obtained their licence. While initial training is necessary to gain a real estate licence, there have been no requirements for agents to stay updated with industry changes, legislation updates, or best practices.

Real estate transactions are often the largest financial decisions people make in their lives, involving hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of dollars. Entrusting such a significant investment to a professional who hasn't been required to update their knowledge or stay informed about changing regulations is understandably concerning for many property owners.

This new requirement aims to address that gap and ensure that agents remain knowledgeable and up to date with the latest legal requirements, industry trends, and ethical practices.

What is CPD and Why is It Important?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a structured program of learning designed to improve an agent's skills and knowledge in their field. CPD training will cover a range of essential topics, including:
✔️ Updates to Queensland real estate laws and regulations
✔️ Ethical and professional conduct
✔️ Market trends and industry insights
✔️ Risk management and dispute resolution
✔️ Client communication and negotiation skills

By mandating CPD, the government is ensuring that agents stay informed and capable of providing the highest level of service to their clients. This means buyers and sellers can feel more confident knowing their agent has current industry knowledge and is compliant with the latest regulatory standards.

How the Process Will Work

From 6th June 2025, all real estate agents will need to:

  1. Complete the required CPD training within each 12-month period.
  2. Obtain a Certificate of Attainment upon completion of the training.
  3. Submit the certificate to the Office of Fair Trading as proof of compliance.

Agents who fail to meet these requirements risk losing their licence, reinforcing the importance of staying compliant.

Benefits for Clients and the Industry

Increased professionalism – Buyers and sellers will have greater confidence knowing their agent is well-trained and up to date with industry changes.
Enhanced protection – Up-to-date knowledge helps agents protect their clients from legal and financial risks.
Better outcomes – Improved negotiation skills, market insights, and client communication will lead to better outcomes for both buyers and sellers.
Stronger industry reputation – A higher standard of service will increase trust in the real estate profession, raising the overall reputation of the industry.
